Chicago 3

Megan would love to have this big Lizzie to play with in her bedroom. We saw him welcoming people to the Shedd Aquarium.

Cailean would have enjoyed visiting ancient Egypt with us at the Field Museum of Natural History where a traveling exhibit about King Tut and life in his time was on display. This museum is also the home of the largest, most complete fossil skeleton of a T-Rex. It is named Susie after the person who discovered it.

Outside the Shedd Aquarium, we found this guy hoisting this big fish. For a moment we thought it might be Jacob showing us his latest catch.

We could imagine Grant mounted on his charger dressed in this suit of armor. Look out you inferior knights! We found this and a whole room of armor in the Art Institute of Chicago. While we only had a short time there, we did get to see American Gothic by Grant Wood which is their signature holding.

Talk about the windy city! Intrepid photographer Annette captured this incredible event. She claims she was able to keep the camera still by standing on my lee side. We truly enjoyed the city of Chicago for the short time we had there.

Chicago

Luckily for us, Judy and David were in Chicago at the same time we were. We got together for a fun day that started at Burnham Harbor and included a trip to Navy Pier, Millenium Park and ended with too much of a great thing-Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. David's brother Steve guided us around the city.

This is The Bean, a sculpture in Millenium Park in the heart of Chicago. The reflections of the city and of the humans who played inside and out were truly amazing and unique.

We left Chicago on Saturday morning just at the start of a period of stormy weather and headed down the Chicago River with all its bridges and barges.

Wednesday, Sept 6

I must admit this was one of the most unusual sailing partners we have had. At one time we had six eager little birds catching bugs for us. The one pictured was giving the captain advice on how to approach Chicago. And was soon rewarded by the captain with a dead fly which was gobbled up quickly. They sailed with us for about 2 hours. Guess they are headed in the same direction as we are.

The mast was stepped today by Crowley's on the Calumet River. Tomorrow we will go back out the river and go up to Chicago which is only 10 miles to our north. We hope to meet family there ( Judy and David Drummond - Gary's sister and brother in law from Texas). They are on their way to Door Co. but will be making the stop in Chicago to see David's brother. We will also be meeting one of Susan's classmates from the University of Michigan who has mail for us. Thank you Kasia.

Here's how we have now placed our bikes on the rail for transporting. It allows access to the rear lockers and the swim platform and requires only a couple of bungies to keep my bike from moving.

Here we are at the Grand Haven, MI beach with the bikes after traveling from the marina on the excellent bike trails here.
